The Fox explores the ever-tightening tensions of love and hate among two older women devoted to each other and a young man determined to separate and capture only one. Sheri Blair's bittersweet sound interprets beautifully the tonal variety of this tale. The young man's voice hypnotizes the listener. Ellen March's final loneliness and confusion is reflected in Blair's soft, wrenching cadences of despair. Blair's reading is paced slowly enough to allow words to make the necessary visual and aural impact. Gender differentiation is done not by artificial changes of pitch, but by natural adjustments to tone and emphasis. The controlled quietness of the reading makes even more grotesque the emotional and physical violence against which it is played. It is a singularly effective performance. P.W.
