QUEEN HEREAFTER

This richly described and deeply researched historical fiction is made more authentic by the narration of Sara Vickers, especially her delicious Scottish accent. Her contralto pitch and easy handling of the text bring this new vision of Lady Macbeth to life. Vickers does not use different voices, but it is usually easy to distinguish who is speaking during the dialogue. Winding through this artful retelling of Shakespeare's play are scenes of medieval Scotland, the feuds of competing lords, desire, power, vengeance, and hate--all influenced by ancient mystical beliefs. Vickers forcefully portrays Gruoch's (Lady Macbeth's) grim ambition as she chooses, time and again, to pursue a path to the throne, as was foretold by her Pictish grandmother.
