THE CRIMINALIZATION OF CHRISTIANITY

Read in a voice that sounds both strident and adolescent, another polemic of the Christian Right confuses the right to speak freely with the desire to impose religious beliefs on captive audiences in publicly funded institutions. Janet Folger earns some empathy for her grieving at the lack of overt moral influence in most of this country's public arenas. She gives effective, often sensational, examples of how Christian proselytizing is unreasonably prohibited in some settings while, at the same time, vulgarity in the media proliferates. Though the author's speedy reading and unrelenting righteousness make listening unpleasant, the lesson is an important salvo in one of the many public debates that make this country great.
