Well-balanced and clear, Forbes's North Carolina accents are distinctive enough to bring each character to life but subtle enough to avoid distraction or caricature. The beautifully written text dances with Forbes's sweetly rounded vowels and tireless enthusiasm. However, the novel features more than a folksy voice; the setting is lovingly described, and the characters are almost mesmerizing as they endure Civil War and lost love.
