WOMEN OF GOOD FORTUNE

Narrator Catherine Ho portrays three Shanghai friends who represent the struggles and limitations women face in contemporary Chinese society. Jane has always been told she's ugly and is stuck in a marriage to the one person who proposed to her, hardworking Rina is overlooked for promotions due to sexism and wants to freeze her eggs, and people-pleaser Lulu feels obligated to quit her job and marry the rich bachelor who has proposed. A successful heist of Lulu's wedding money could solve all their problems--if everything goes according to plan. Ho beautifully pronounces all the names and Chinese words peppered throughout the novel. A light voice for meek Lulu, shrill for sharp-tongued Jane, and monotone for stoic Rina show Ho's ability to match the right voice to each character.
