Ex-cop Nate Heller’s stint in Guadalcanal ends with his “million dollar wound,” and he returns to Chicago to resume his life as a private detective, becoming entangled once again with Hollywood, showgirls, and gangsters. Rasovsky projects the 1940s’ ambience with a range of voices that capture the period perfectly. Sex and violence and the ups and downs of all the characters are portrayed with just the right emotional touch, and the frequent flashes of humor shine through. The accents seem a bit more New York than Chicago but all in all a fine performance. S.S.R. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine [Published: FEB/ MAR 06]
