At first the narratives seem unconnected, and you wonder if this isn't a volume of short stories. No, the child abductions and Olivia's homecoming are creepily part of the same plot. Dean Robertson presents the book in a light Louisiana dialect--enough to provide regional atmosphere, but not enough to be annoying. Her characters are reasonably differentiated and convincingly acted. But Robertson's voice in the narrative passages has an odd gravelly sound, as though she constantly needs to clear her throat but refuses to do so. And her reading of the narrative portions of the book lacks excitement. While the story is gripping, the performance, unfortunately, is not.
