Rachel Nishizawa narrates these feminist stories with a blend of poise, bafflement, anger, and wry humor. Though they include a variety of settings ranging from small towns to spaceships, the stories all tackle a similar theme: women trying to survive men. Nishizawa does a great job altering her voice just enough to give each woman a different feel. In a story narrated by a sex bot, her voice is smooth, detached, and a bit wistful. In another, about a woman who is trying to come to grips with her girlfriend's unplanned pregnancy, her performance is brash and a little breathless. A solid performance of a solid debut collection.
