DeFelice's sixth-grade protagonist, Allie, is clearly in possession of the risk-taking gene discovered by molecular geneticists and popularized in news magazines last year. She's a monumental risk taker, in fact. The one-hundred-foot shale cliffs of Fossil Glen beckon to her; she is driven to ignore her parents' warnings to stay away. Christina Moore is the perfect match for Allie. She captures Allie's intensity of emotion, her feelings of estrangement from her peers, and her guts in the face of supernatural voices, ghostly encounters--and extreme danger. The strength of Moore's reading lies in her ability to capture the nuances of the adolescent personality, Allie's animation, her best friend Karen's aloof psuedosophistication, her buddy Dub's open and eager acceptance of startling events.
