THE FRIEND ZONE EXPERIMENT

Rebecca Yeo narrates a romance that also features family drama. Renee Goh and Yap Ket Siong were on the verge of becoming something more than friends 10 years ago; now, after a chance encounter at a private gallery preview, they have the opportunity to reignite their relationship. Yeo perfectly balances the trauma Renee and Ket Siong both carry with the giddiness they feel at a second chance at love, making for a surprisingly realistic story. While both Renee and Ket Siong have trauma to unpack, Yeo does a careful job balancing her tone so that it never overwhelms. Set primarily among the East Asian diaspora in London, the story calls for various accents, which Yeo handily performs: Singaporean, Malaysian, French Vietnamese, and Taiwanese, as well as British and American.
