In Johansen’s political thriller, photojournalist Bess Grady finds herself in the middle of an international conspiracy that threatens to invade the U.S. Megan Gallagher lends an angst-ridden portrayal of the heroine, already damaged by her witnessing of violence in Somalia and Sarajevo, who must now face the horror of her own sister’s kidnapping. The intelligence in Gallagher’s voice mirrors Grady’s headstrong personality perfectly. However, her renditions of male voices and the accents of foreign characters tend to fall short, leaving the listener unsure who is talking to whom. Overall, the piece is strong and full of the suspense Johansen’s novels are known for. R.A.P. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/JUL 98]
