Author Wilson is phenomenally successful in her native England; she tackles real young-adult problems compassionately and realistically. Ellie gained weight when her mom died, but she has never felt fat until her best friend wins a modeling contest. Wilson brilliantly portrays the sheer torture of trying to lose weight when you're a growing youngster in a high-calorie world. The narrator splendidly recreates the pain and emotion that accompany adolescence--peer pressure as well as unintended "insults" in chance remarks. Since Ellie is smart enough to realize that she's in danger of joining her girlfriend on a collision course of anorexia and bulimia, her confusion is multiplied.
