Damon Runyon's stories of Broadway's gamblers and gangsters were once enormously popular. They were made into successful movies, as well as the musical GUYS AND DOLLS. This program contains six shows from radio's "Damon Runyon Theatre," all from 1949, fully dramatized, with music and sound effects. The acting is good, at times very good; cast lists would have been appreciated as they aren't given in the shows. The stories, some humorous, some sad, some bittersweet, are well adapted. Though they're sometimes old-fashioned--sentimental or full of coincidences--they still engage and entertain. For radio fans, Runyon fans, and those open to solid stories from a bygone era, this program will be a winner. W.M. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/ JUL 06]
