This installment in the Dark series finds Jax, an independent and driven cop, joining forces with Lucian, a centuries-old Carpathian. Newcomers to the series will learn the important differences between Lucian and his kind and the vampires whose forces he does not care to join. Juanita Parker does justice to this romance novel. She maintains both an intensity and a sensitivity that are fitting for the strong Jax and her interactions with Lucian as they come together personally and professionally. Parker deftly draws out the contrasts between light and darkness, which form the underpinnings of the plot. No prior experience with the series is required.
