THE GLASGOW BELLE

This traditional historical romance has a few differences that keep it from completely following the norm; therein lies its interest. Isla Anderson is "rescued" by an elderly, wealthy earl. However, her fortunes are again reversed when his son returns home to claim his inheritance. Isla is particularly intriguing when she strikes out on her own. Narrator Jean Simmons gives life and emotion to a text that is rich with a Scottish setting and characters--gentry and plain folk. Central to the story is the Glasgow Belle, a public house that is frequented by everyone. Simmons's skill with description keeps listeners alert throughout until the clever ending.
