When author Henry James and illustrator Georges Du Maurier met in London in the 1880s, they formed a friendship that affected their personal lives and their work. David Lodge examines the ramifications of the relationship in this intriguing novel. At first, narrator Christopher Kay seems unduly affected by James's famous longeurs, as the first chapters are read with studied declamation and excessive pauses between sentences. Yet as soon as Du Maurier appears, Kay picks up the pace; the rest of the book is read with interest and clarity.
