Siobhan Clarke is heading up a missing-person investigation from a different Edinburgh office, while her friend Christine Esson has her old job and is investigating a murder that took place two doors down from Rebus at the prison. But what hasn't changed is that James Macpherson is still the perfect narrator for this familiar band of characters. Rebus quips, the gangsters snarl, Siobhan is measured, and Malcolm Fox has gone all smarmy. Macpherson understands the Rebus world so well that his performances are always impeccable and vastly entertaining. His timing is spot-on, and the pace whips along.
