THE WORLD TO COME

When Benjamin Ziskind sees a painting that once hung in his parents' house hanging in a museum, he steals it, an act that opens a window on events that wind back to Marc Chagall's art classes in 1920s' Russia. The novel spans generations at the same time that it reveals how Ben, his sister, and a museum employee deal with the theft. Although his voices are repetitive for minor characters, William Dufris portrays the central characters with voices that provide insight into their thoughts and feelings. His narration makes it easy to follow Dara Horn's complicated but fascinating linkages as she demonstrates how Ben's actions are shaped by generations before him.
