GONE THE DREAMS AND THE DANCING

This gem won a Golden Spur Best Western Historical Novel award and, while known to Western afficionados, it should have a wider audience. George Guidall is the perfect narrator to spin out this sad, evocative tale of the early years of the Comanches's confinement to the Ft. Sill, Texas, Reservation. Guidall brilliantly conveys empathy for Chief Kwahadi and his people yet balances the harsh realities of American expansion and domination. Guidall's voice echoes a soulful melancholy for the lost culltures. Told through Liverpool Morgan, an Army wagoneer who forges an unusual friendship with the Native Americans, the story is stirring and eloquent with a grace and conscience often lacking in many Western tales.
