The hope and desperation of the ordinary peasants who lived during the Manchu Dynasty, Wang Lung's fight to save his family and his land, and the ties that bind them so closely to the earth are all made clear in a fleeting twelve and a half hours of drama, superbly rendered by Guidall's restrained use of pitch and pacing.
