This second installment of an "ancient to modern" course in European history can be appreciated on its own. A cursory treatment of earlier periods makes the flow of events in those sections admirably easy to follow. Professor Hosking gives much more detail as he approaches the present, which is welcome but harder to follow. Still, the material is well organized and presented. Some "uhms" and audible page-turning aren't bothersome, but occasional bouts of a halting delivery, sometimes almost word by word, as if the professor hadn't formulated his thoughts, can irritate--but not enough to spoil this solid course. An illustrated booklet gives the lectures, abridged, and a bibliography; supplemental online material and a "final" were not seen by AUDIOFILE.
