ESAU MY SON A Parent's Journey

Humorous and poignant, this memoir tells the story of a vegetarian, feminist, peace activist Jewish mother whose son thwarts her expectations, choosing bombs over books, football over chess, and ultimately joining the Marines to fight in the war his mother opposes. Starting at birth, Black takes listeners through the stages of her son's unexpected development, creating animated scenes with drama and dialogue. Each segment is given musical expression, using "rewritten" tunes from musicals and popular music. For instance, "Testosterone" is sung to the tune "Tradition" from FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Black's storytelling skills are evident in her phrasing, pacing, and the entertaining voices of her son, his friends, and his frantic teachers.
