Listeners meet gods and heroes who are by turns jealous, passionate, and prideful. They're also violent: eyes are put out with hot pokers, a hunter is torn to pieces by his hounds, and Orion, struck by a thunderbolt, is thrown to his place in the heavens with his faithful dog, Sirius. These 10 stories (some well-known, others less so) are told in remarkable detail, which Benjamin Soames keeps deeply engaging with his serious storytelling style and attractive voice. Dramatic swells of classical music punctuate the tales. They might seem over-the-top elsewhere but are fitting here, and enhance the production.
