Berger's novel changes point of view without warning, much the same way the characters themselves jump from thought to thought. Alexandra Fuller's voice is lilting and sweet, eager to help the listener bridge the substantial gaps in plot and character development, but her efforts fall short. It's as if she's bringing high-quality building materials to a foundation built on shifting sands--she holds the listener's attention, but the listener is never sure for what purpose. Instead of the unfolding of a story, the listener is offered glimpses into moments and, while Fuller tries to make these vignettes distinct, the written words lack the clarity necessary for her to share them.
