De Wit's voice links each version of the main character, Kinga, despite their being at war with each other. But who is Kinga? Is she troubled? Does she have multiple-personality disorder? Is this a retelling of the biblical tale of the seven unclean spirits? Oyeyemi herself quotes that gospel early on in the bossy voice of the first Kinga.
