In his first lecture Professor Goldman lays out the theoretical concerns that the following 23 lectures will address. These concerns boil down to how scientists know what they know and what this implies for humanity. The debate dates back to pre-Christian times. Focusing on the modern and contemporary periods, however, Goldman discusses the major thinkers who have defined truth and reality itself. He manages to humanize his topic at every step, expressing a broad emotional range through his voice and providing practical parallels and explanations of the complex theories addressed.
