THE SHOOTING STAR

British expressions and the narrator's thick accent in this UK import may initially put off some listeners, but those who persist will be rewarded with a funny and touching story. A netball team (girls' basketball) is threatened when competitive school sports are eliminated. Jelly Jackson, the team's shooting star, is devastated. Not only does she love the game, it's the only arena in which she doesn't embarrass herself. With humor and flair, Gillian Walton narrates Jelly's struggle against indifferent adults, bickering teammates, and a condescending sister. Walton shifts smoothly among characters.
