The title pays homage to James Thurber's story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." Like Mitty, Becky retreats into daydreams for relief from her insecurities. Unlike the Thurber character, this young suburbanite holds to a strong religious faith to guide her through the typical problems, serious and petty, she faces as a wife and mother in an uncertain world. The novel is for listeners who believe that God weeps at the fall of a sparrow. Possessed of a young mom voice, narrator Johanna Parker barely skirts making a Stepford Wife out of her protagonist. Her talents well match this material in tone and quality. Y.R. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine [Published: FEB/ MAR 07]
