This is an incredible audiobook. It is the story of a young Cambodian during one of the great tragedies of the twentieth century. Sophal Leng Steng was 9 years old in 1975 when the communist Khmer Rouge took over her country. In the next three years, the Khmer Rouge sought to create a wholly new society, destroying all that had to do with the past. In this awful social experiment, roughly 2 million Cambodians--out of a population of 8 million--were either killed by the Khmer Rouge or died of starvation or disease brought about by Khmer Rouge policy. Susan O'Malley's reading transports the listener back to Cambodia during that horrific period. One feels as if one is listening directly to this young girl and her struggle for survival. In a work filled with emotion, O'Malley's reading always perfectly matches the text. M.L.C. Winner of AUDIOFILE Earphones Award © AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/SEP 99]
