Despite the best efforts of narrator Daniel Philpott and the great production values of Recorded Books, this is a story that has trouble overcoming its many jumbled subjects and glaring plot holes. Twins Connor and Grace, orphans determined to escape foster parents they dislike, steal a boat that promptly breaks up in a storm at sea. Connor is rescued by regular old pirates, Grace by "vampirates." If you can get past the confusing plot and the seeming endless unanswered questions it raises, the narration is quite good. Philpott gives it his best, with plenty of emotion, great accents that allow you to easily differentiate characters, and a convincing pirate growl.
