The time is 1864. Lizzie Martin arrives in London to take up her post as paid companion to a wealthy widow. Almost immediately, she learns that her predecessor did not elope, as had been believed, but was murdered. The story, told in alternating chapters by Lizzie and by a young Scotland Yard detective, is expertly read by Maggie Mash and Glen McCready. Both handle male and female voices believably and have fine dramatic pacing. They manage to create interesting audio portraits of working- and middle-class characters that are consistent between sections. Such is their skill with accents and narrative that the listener simply relaxes into a well-told tale. R.E.K. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/ JUL 07]
