Washington politico Terry McAuliffe's memoir fails to be more than the sum of its parts but nonetheless provides an interesting description of the highs and lows of his life. McAuliffe never pretends that his book is anything more than his life is—mostly good stuff, with a few self-deprecating warts included. As a young democrat fund-raiser, he wouldn't take no for an answer and managed to raise tens of millions and revamp his party's entire apparatus. McAuliffe narrates his own life story, which lends authenticity at the expense of the clarity and pacing of a more professional reader. He has a tendency to read too quickly at times, and sometimes his words become truncated or strung too closely together, making them hard to understand.
