Fiction • 6 hrs. 30 min • Unabridged • © 1992

Set nearly a century ago, this is a rather pedestrian tale of life and love in the deep forests of northern Manitoba. Laurie Klein's credible presentation is the saving grace of this overblown short story. Klein differentiates characters while offering listeners a pleasant balance between reader and dramatist. Other strengths include voice inflection, phrasing and pitch. She is particularly effective using French dialects but leaves much to be desired in British characterization. Technically, this production is very well done and attractively packaged. T.J.M. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPT 92]
