ANYTHING FOR A QUIET LIFE

by | Read by Christopher Scott

Mystery & Suspense • 8.3 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1992

Semi-retirement doesn't turn out quite as Jonas Pickett expected when he arrived in the small English seaside town of Shackleton. Having left a busy practice in London, he opens a small law office in the hope of a quieter life. Fortunately for the reader, Jonas is incapable of remaining uninvolved, and with him we are drawn into cases ranging from a contested will, to the rights of treasure-trove, to the revenge of a WWII resistance fighter. Christopher Scott does an excellent job pacing and interpreting the story, making the most of its slowly evolving picture of small-town life. He also differentiates among the voices of characters, using a range of British accents effortlessly and to good effect. All in all, this is an entertaining, diverting and well-produced mystery.
