Hampson's view of England in the 1960s rings true. Details that bring the period alive include references to the Beatles, Carnaby Street fashion, and clubbing, as well as prostitution and real-life crime figures of the day. Daisy Lane returns home to her small town, grieving for her murdered husband and planning revenge on his murderer. Narrator Annie Aldington captures the period, as well as hardworking characters, friendship, and a sense of family. Daisy's best friend, Vera, is a brothel madam—a “bad girl” with a heart of gold. Aldington portrays the deep friendship between Daisy and Vera as they stick by each other through good times and bad. This clever mystery offers an entertaining glimpse of a colorful time and place.
