Louis L'Amour's heroes often seem quite similar to each other, but these six short stories offer a variety of genuinely different male leads, as well as different plots. Narrator Jason Culp enhances this sense of variety with his entertaining characterizations. For example, in "Big Man," we meet friendly giant Cherry Noble, who prefers planting cherry trees to fighting, and who sounds educated and expansive. Then there's the twangy-voiced Cactus Kid, only 5'7" and, in his own words, a "dude," yet one who can ride the rail with any man, despite his fondness for fancy clothing. Culp also supplies a reliable cast of background characters--from outlaws to barkeepers to beautiful girls--to fill out the stories in a most satisfying way.
