Gerson was chief speechwriter for George W. Bush in the years 1999-2006, and also functioned as a policy advisor. Here he argues that a conservatism aimed solely at shrinking government misses the point: There are some things government does well and some services, notably humanitarian aid, in which government should be heavily engaged. Among these, he cites Bush's often successful efforts to fight the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa. Narrator Alan Nebelthau has little chance to exercise dramatic skills in a book such as this. He rolls the text along in his flat Middle-American baritone, and soon the listener forgets he's there--the sign of an effective reader in the case of well-written nonfiction.
