Slow down! At the start it seems as if Faludi, one of our most insightful feminist and cultural critics, might have come up with her finest book yet. Subtitled "Fear and Fantasy in Post-9/11 America?" the study emphasizes woman's role as captive and the male role as savior in what Faludi refers to as the "American security myth." Narrator Beth McDonald does her best to provide an animated reading, but there's just so much information packed so densely throughout the first few chapters that the listener can't keep up. The pace slackens as the book moves into historical narratives, but the material isn't as interesting, and McDonald's voice levels off to an unobtrusive monotone.
