Narrator Anne Flosnik reads this convoluted romantic suspense set in 1835 London. Rosalind de la Fontaine and Nicholas Vail, the Seventh Earl of Mountjoy, work to unravel the clues found in an old wizard's diary of his adventures in the "land of the Pale." Complication sets in when someone tries to kidnap Rosalind, and someone tries to shoot Nicholas—all while his family tries to prevent his marriage to Rosalind. Flosnik's smoky voice varies in intensity and crispness as she portrays the story’s male characters. For the women she reads in a sharper, brighter voice. As the novel slowly unfolds, with its old-fashioned long-winded speeches, Flosnik works hard to keep the listener engaged with the initial mystery.
