Griffiths's exciting mystery is centered on the 1969 theft of Caravaggio's NATIVITY in Palermo, Italy. This fictional adventure involves a London art recovery cop, two beautiful women, and a number of different Italian crime families--and ranges over Italy, from Florence to Calabria. Daniel Philpott, employing minimal vocal range, does a masterful job of differentiating the male and female voices. His pacing is also good during the sometimes long passages of descriptive prose. In the first half or the book the volume goes up and down, but it's tolerable. This is for followers of Ian Fleming and John le Carré, lovers of Renaissance art, and all those who care about Italians, their culture, and their complex history.
