When her father, an ambulance driver, is reported missing, India journeys to the battlefield to find him. What she sees and experiences, no one, particularly a child, should ever behold. Narrator Julia Gibson splendidly re-creates family, friends, neighbors, and soldiers in a convincing manner. Listeners are on the frontier with India. She learns real grief when her father is killed and she must help her devastated mother. Added interest--and relief--is provided by India's first romance and her fascination with chemistry and science, rather than her religion lessons.
