Inspector Morse finds himself with a busload of suspects after an American tour arrives in Oxford, a jeweled relic is stolen, and two bodies turn up. Woodward has an exceptional grasp of the laconic, wry speech of Morse and the eager Sergeant Lewis. The police statements are handled with the greatest skill; it is as if one were listening to direct recordings of the questioning. The American voices are well done, as are fine cross-gender interpretations, including a flustered wife and a boozy tour coordinator. The sound quality of the production is unusually fine. R.F.W.
