Carol Smith's novel (which has nothing to do with the movie of the same name) is an emotional drama that leaves listeners on the edge of their seats. At its core is the story of Rose, a young woman smitten by Joe, who refuses to acknowledge that his love for her differs widely from her insatiable love for him. Tense and riveting, the book is a wonderful vehicle for narrator Colleen Prendergast, who channels Rose’s love and rage into a memorable performance. Equally compelling is Prendergast’s portrayal of Joe, who is busy falling for Rose’s younger sister. Prendergast fully captures his varying emotions and his failure to understand the depths to which Rose will stoop to get her man. D.J.S. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2009]
