Dick King Smith writes about children with the same gentle humor and insight he uses for animal stories, THE SHEEP PIG(aka BABE), MARTIN'S MINE, etc. Nine-year-old Ned is primarily interested in improving his skills as a soccer goalie until he encounters a Victorian doll in his grandmother's attic. Nigel Lambert portrays Ned with a perfect touch of uncertainty, reflecting his unease at finding himself beguiled by a doll. Subtlety is an asset, and Nigel Lambert, narrator of many of KinG Smith's titles, employs just the right amount of delight and restraint. His children's voices are believable, and ages are well defined. Except for having to remember that "football" equates to American soccer, young children and parents will enjoy the tale.
