Some followers of the Kay Scarpetta series might have thought that the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia was in a rut, but the latest thriller not only dispels the notion, but opens doors for her future--outside Virginia and its state morgue. Kate Reading, who has recorded six of the series, unabridged, has an astute familiarity with the series' characters. Lt. Pete Marino and Scarpetta's niece, Lucy, both play prominently in this episode of the puzzling "werewolf" case. Reading conveys the boisterous, "big" character of Marino with a fine balance--true to the author's intent and highly listenable. Reading also does extremely well with the undercurrents of tension, personal pride, and ambition--not an easy task. If you're not already a convert, jump into Scarpetta's world and enjoy terrific audio listening. R.F.W. Winner of AUDIOFILE Earphones Award © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine [Published: FEB/MAR 01]
