LEAVING FISHERS

Margaret Peterson Haddix builds upon her experiences as a newspaper reporter in the crafting of her novels, which challenge the young adult listener to consider contemporary issues. In LEAVING FISHERS, Dorry Stevens, who craves a sense of belonging at her new high school, becomes involved with a religious organization, the Fishers of Men. In the opening chapters, an adolescent voice barely responds to her family members or new schoolmates. As the Fishers influence Dorry's relationships, Vivian Bayubay's presentation underscores the conflicts she faces. With subtle intensity, Bayubay dif-ferentiates the main characters and convinces the listener to sympathize with Dorry's struggle and metamorphosis.
