THE WATER'S EDGE

by | Read by Christopher Lane

Mystery & Suspense • 13 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2008

THE WATER'S EDGE is a dark and gritty action novel set on Long Island during the off season. The characters include Mafia thugs, hard women, and a flawed hero. The murders, fistfights, car chases, betrayals, and intrigue that fill the plot are compressed into one twenty-four-hour period. At first, narrator Christopher Lane's unemotional delivery seems flat. But as the story progresses, it becomes apparent that he has effectively captured the persona of protagonist Jake Bechet, a cool and proficient ex-prize fighter. Although Lane's tone is calm, he manages to move the story along at a brisk pace without ever sounding rushed. Fans of the classic private-eye novel will find a lot to like here.
