The daughter of a British father and a French mother, Evelyn St. John is a qualified candidate for the Secret Service. Trained and given the code name ALOUETTE, she parachutes into occupied territory to fight with the French Resistance. Elizabeth Buchan's novel literally unfolds through the reading by Stella Gonet. She reads with no self-consciousness, as if she were a psychic medium with voices flowing through her from the author to the listener. The many characters have their own sounds and accents, and it is their personalities one remembers without interference from or judgment by the narrator. J.P.
