Perhaps Vonnegut's most underrated story, this is a cunningly funny and unforgettable satire. It centers on an alcoholic fire fighter named Eliot, head of the fabulously rich Rosewater family, and an enigmatic writer named Kilgore Trout, as they set out to analyze human nature with their own eye for detail. Narrator Eric Michael Summerer does a fine job of capturing the story’s wide-ranging emotions. Summerer displays an inherent ability to portray rousing characters who are, at times, intentional caricatures of themselves. Ultimately, Vonnegut's classic still seems fresh, thanks to a spirited reading that listeners will find entertaining. L.B. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2008]
