In this absorbing memoir Nigel Nicolson's own story is necessarily bound up with those of his parents, Harold Nicolson and Vita Sackville-West. Nicolson grew up among the Bloomsbury group, intimate especially with Virginia Woolf, whose volumes of letters he eventually edited. A generous and affectionate son and a graceful writer, Nicolson lived among inter-esting people in interesting times. David Case at times reads as if he is too sophisticated to bother and at others as if he is telling a funny story when he is not, but his English accents (various are called for) are fine, and he does a terrific Winston Churchill.
